Discreet lines, strong ambiance: Glass door hinge from Basys awarded prize for innovative architecture

Basys – Bartels Systembeschläge is one of the winners of the „Iconic Awards 2021: Innovative Architecture“. With the „Pivota DX Glass“, the building hardware manufacturer from Kalletal/Germany developed a concealed hinge for revolving glass doors and thus paved the way for a complete system consisting of hinge, lock, handle and frame, which subordinates itself to the transparent and filigree aesthetics of all-glass doors in a minimalist and discreet manner and also makes the doors suitable for use in commercial projects.

Concealed door hinges are in vogue. The hardware technology should be as invisible as possible and provide a puristic look. This applies all the more when filigree glass comes into play as a material. So at first it seems paradoxical to hide the technology even on a glass door.

The building hardware manufacturer Basys has taken up this challenge. With the „Pivota DX Glass“, the company adapted the proven technology of its concealed hinges for use on glass doors – with corresponding advantages in terms of scalability of the load-bearing capacity and the existing CE certification. The frame part disappears in the frame, the leaf part in a box screwed and clamped to the glass door. The connection created in this way guarantees a high level of strength in the long term. Magnetically held cover plates ensure a screw-free appearance of the hinge when the door is open.

The highlight: Basys not only developed the hinge, but also expanded it into a system suitable for use in commercial projects. The hinge with the box forms a unit with the lock, including lock case and handle, as well as with the frame on request. The components are finely coordinated in design and are flush with the frame on both sides. And they can be installed in the tried and tested way without changing the frame construction. The system allows the use of an electronic locking cylinder, but locking systems are also possible. In combination with the tightly closing door leaf, the „Pivota DX Glass“ is also recommended for sound-insulating glass elements – not an unimportant argument in office construction.

Line only

The hardware system for all-glass doors, for which the concealed hinge from Basys was the starting point, creates the prerequisite for creating spacious rooms with transparent walls, in which filigree lines alone ensure a strong ambiance. This was the deciding factor for the international and independent jury of experts at the „Iconic Award 2021: Innovative Architecture“ to give one of the coveted Winner prizes in the category „Product – Building Technologies“ to the concealed glass door hinge „Pivota DX Glass“.

Hybrid technology also makes the system universal: thanks to the material hybrids, different load-bearing capacities can be covered with identical hinge dimensions. In addition, wooden and glass doors can be interchanged, and a uniform architectural approach can be pursued in properties with doors made of different materials. The „Pivota DX Glass“ is suitable for standard frames on flush doors with glass thicknesses of eight, ten and twelve millimetres, which can also be in frameless design.

In 2001, Basys was the first German manufacturer ever to introduce a concealed and three-dimensionally adjustable hinge, „Pivota“, and thus initiated a new design trend in the door industry. In the meantime, the name „Pivota DX“ stands for a complete range of concealed hinges for flush doors. With load capacities from 40 to 350 kilograms per pair, it covers the entire door spectrum. The core of the hinge series is the patented design principle of a symmetrical four-arm joint, which transfers the forces of the door leaf evenly into the frame. The doors can be opened up to 180 degrees, have maintenance-free bearings and are three-dimensionally adjustable.

The Iconic Award: Innovative Architecture

With the „Iconic Awards: Innovative Architecture“, the German Design Council initiated a neutral, international architecture and design competition that for the first time takes the disciplines into account in their interplay. Awards are given for visionary buildings, innovative products and sustainable communication from all sectors of architecture, construction and real estate as well as the manufacturing industry. The focus is on the holistic staging and interaction of the trades in the context of architecture.

The German Design Council acts as one of the world’s leading centres of excellence for design and architecture at the interface between designers and the building industry. Its awards are regarded as independent seals of quality of international standing for contemporary developments and design achievements. Basys will receive the „Iconic Award 2021: Innovative Architecture“ on 11 October 2021 during Expo Real in Munich at the “Pinakothek der Moderne”.
